What is Interior Designer SEO?
Interior designer Search Engine Optimization (SEO) uses search engines (Bing, Google, etc.) to drive more “digital traffic” to your website. The goal is to obtain first page rankings for phrases (or “keywords”) your potential interior design clients are searching.

Deep Diving Into Interior Designer SEO: Thinking Like Google
As you know by now, SEO for interior design can be complicated, but when you get overwhelmed start to think like Google.
Google isn’t able to rate the quality level of the services you provide. They can’t chat with you on the phone to get more information, or pay for your services. So, they look at hundreds of ranking factors and see what boxes your site checks. These ranking factors help to establish the trustworthiness and legitimacy of your business.
Search engine optimization agencies, consultants, or even YOU can optimize your website for these ranking factors.
Ultimately, the foundation of successful SEO campaigns comes down to two tactics: backlinks and quality content. First, we’ll discuss the keywords that go in your content.
Keywords for Interior Designers
Keywords are what helps Google identify the target audience you are going after. Once you identify the keywords your dream clients are searching on Google and other search engines, you can really start to deep dive into SEO for your interior design firm.
When doing keyword research you’ll identify two types of keywords, long-tail keywords and short-tail keywords. Below are examples of both:
- Short-tail Keyword Example: “interior designer”
- Long-tail Keyword Example: “modern interior designers denver”
When it comes to choosing between the two for your SEO campaign, I recommend choosing long-tail keywords. Why? Well I’m glad you asked.
When you type in “interior designer” on Google you will get some local results, but you will also get articles about what interior designers do, or even occupational outlooks from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Since there are so many mixed results, it is likely Google isn’t sure what you’re searching for.
While you can rank amongst these results, it is much harder. This doesn’t mean it’s impossible, it often takes more time.
When you type in “modern interior designers denver” on Google you will get results about all kinds of interior designers in Denver. This means Google has a much better understanding of what we’re looking for and so do the people searching keywords like this.
Oftentimes when a potential client types in “modern interior designers denver” they not only know exactly what they’re looking for, they are also ready to hire a modern interior designer in Denver.
Searches like these convert into clients more often and they are usually easier to rank for.
Easy Ways to Find Keywords
There are many paid and free tools you can use for keyword research. Below are a few free tools to help you narrow down your keyword list.
Typing in different keywords into Google will show you other searches people before you have searched. Some of these will be worth pursuing while others will not. Out of this list a potential long-tail keyword to search might be “interior designer denver mid century modern” (this will depend on your desires of course).
Keywords Everywhere Google Chrome Plugin
This tool is similar to Google, but it often gives you more searches users are typing in.
Surfer SEO Google Chrome Plugin
This might be the best, free keyword research tool on the market. It not only shows you how many times keywords are searched per month, but also how many links you’ll need to rank on page one for those keywords.
List of Popular Keywords for Interior Designers to Target in 2022

- Best interior designer in [city]
- [city] Interior design
- [city] Interior designer
- [city] Interior designers
- How much does an interior designer cost in [city]?
- Residential interior design [city]

Content
After you find the keywords you want, you’ll want to write content for your website about them. Be careful though, you’ll need to make sure that different keywords have their own dedicated pages. (i.e., have one page dedicated to kitchen designs and one for residential interior design).
Now that you’re ready to write, here are a few tips I use to obtain page one rankings for any site I work with:
- Make sure to use keywords throughout your content and especially in your headings
- Lengthy content often performs better so aim for at least 1000 words, but get to 2000 if you can.
- Answer as many questions as you can. More questions gives your content more value, which in turn can give you better rankings. Think of questions you often get during the hiring process.
- Add some images of your work and put keywords in the file name and alt text.
- Be sure to add “variants” of the keyword you’re targeting. So, if your keyword is “Denver interior designer” you’ll also want to add “Denver, CO interior designer, “interior designer in Denver, etc.
- Get keywords in your title tag and meta description.
Backlinks
Backlinks, or “links” are when your website gets listed on another website. This is a huge authority and trust signal in the eyes of Google. So, the more high quality backlinks you have, the more trust you will gain with Google and the better your rankings will become.
Keep in mind though that not all links are created equal. Google cracked down on websites that were using “spammy” link building techniques in 2012. Many people were getting website links in whatever way they could (not good). Many websites were penalized by Google for this. When you get penalized by Google, you lose your rankings (really not good).
When you go after links today, you want them to be of the highest quality possible. Here are a few types of links that are good to target:
- Authoritative Links. In a perfect world, you’ll want most of your backlinks from a website that carries a lot of authority on Google. These sites have been around awhile and often have domain extensions like .edu, .gov or .org.
- Topical Links. These are links that are related to the interior design industry. Think of different online interior design publications or directories.
- Local Links. Local links are not only helpful, but they can help with your local rankings. You can get local links from your local chamber of commerce directory or by sponsoring a local organization.
These types of links are hard to get, but if you’re able to get them, they go a long way when it comes to SEO and your rankings.
Local SEO for Interior Designers
Local SEO is similar to SEO. With local SEO you are working to get your business to show up in what we call the “map pack” or the “3 pack” as seen here:
In order to show up here, you need a Google My Business (GMB) listing. Claiming a GMB is FREE. That’s right. Free. Do this if you haven’t done so already.
To start your journey towards ranking in the “3 pack” you need to fill out all the information Google asks for in the GMB platform. Yes, everything. Do not skip any sections. A complete GMB helps with rankings.
Next, you’ll want to build citations. Citations are a type of link that lists out your “NAP”, short for “name, address and phone number”. When Google finds these links it helps them determine your business is legitimate.
Now you’ll want to get reviews for your business. Reviews are a ranking factor when it comes to local SEO and they can help you get more business. If you can get more reviews than your competitors, it usually helps your bottom line and sometimes rankings.
Top Local SEO Tips for Interior Designers in 2022
Local SEO for interior designers can be hard. Below is a look at a few local SEO tips that can help your interior design business rank higher in 2022:
- Set your primary GMB category as “interior designer” or “interior decorator”
- Add “secondary” categories if they are applicable to your business
- Get as many reviews as you can (reviews are a ranking factor)
- Fill out every section of your GMB
- Add a link to your website that is about the main service you want to target
- Build quality and highly authoritative links to your domain
- Create and implement an internal linking strategy
- Target desired keywords in your H1 and H2 tags
- Remove spam listings when possible
- Get a legitimate office address (this will depend on your locale)
Technical SEO
In order to rank well on Google, your website needs to be technically sound.
Websites need to be “secure” and “indexable” by Google. If you have an “http” instead of an “https” at the start of your website URL that’s not good.
You’ll also want your website to have correct headings, meta descriptions, and be error free. If your site is showing 404 codes to users, that is not good for your SEO efforts.

FAQs: Working With Interior Initiatives for Interior Designer SEO Services
How Long Does it Take for Interior Design Businesses to See Results From SEO?
This will depend entirely on the current state of your website and the competition in your market. If your website is brand new, it generally takes a little more time than a website that has been indexed by Google for many years. Also, if you are in a competitive market, this usually takes more time to achieve first page rankings.
What Makes Interior Initiatives Different?
Interior Initiatives is the only U.S. based SEO company focusing solely on interior designers and decorators with agency backed experience. My agency experience comes from law firm SEO which is one of the most competitive industries to do SEO in. At this agency, I specialized in organic and local SEO. Additionally, I’ve even built my own blog that achieved 13,000 pageviews per month.
Which of your SEO plans is right for me?
I offer consulting sessions and monthly, full-service SEO. Consulting is affordable and helps you develop a well-rounded understanding of SEO for interior designers. Monthly SEO means I’ll do the SEO for you and work towards first page rankings.
Why are you helping interior designers?
I believe the interior design industry has always been underserved when it comes to SEO services and learning about SEO. There is too much misinformation on the internet and I’m here to clean that up.
Is SEO worth it?
What if you could consistently rank at the top of your local Houzz, Yelp and Decorilla online directories and bring in qualified leads each month because of it? And because of this you didn’t have to pour money into testing any other marketing strategies ever again? That’s what it can be like when you rank at the top of the first page of Google.
Why Should I Work With You?
My background comes from the agency side of SEO with specialities in organic and local SEO. I’ve worked with lawyers, real estate agents and even built my own website that gets 13,000 pageviews per month. Lawyers I’ve worked with have landed 7-figure cases. Real estate agents under my umbrella have gotten clients out-of-state.
Why Are You Helping Interior Designers?
I believe the interior design industry has always been underserved when it comes to high quality interior design SEO services and learning about SEO. There are too many SEO agencies and consultants out there offering SEO services to every possible industry. By doing this, they never truly get to understand one industry well.
Too many digital marketing agencies launch SEO campaigns, build websites, or collect data and never give their clients access. I believe in having full transparency with all the efforts I work on for my clients. I will never hold your marketing or data hostage. This means you will always have access to:
- Your Website,
- Google Analytics,
- Ad Campaigns,
- Call Tracking,
- Google My Business
